St Fagans — Welsh life across the grounds
St Fagans is the outlier here: an open-air museum of historic buildings, working places and Welsh stories, spread across a large site. It rewards a slower visit and a little weather tolerance.

On the western edge of Cardiff, St Fagans is one of Europe's leading open-air museums and one of Wales's best-loved days out, and it's free. Set in the parkland of an Elizabethan manor, it has rescued and rebuilt more than forty buildings from across Wales, moved stone by stone and reassembled here: farmhouses and cottages, a chapel, a school, a Victorian shop row, a working mill and even a row of terraced ironworkers' houses each furnished to a different decade. Costumed staff and craftspeople keep old skills alive, native livestock graze the fields, and the reconstructed medieval court of the Welsh princes anchors the story. A major redevelopment refreshed the galleries and won it Museum of the Year. Allow most of a day; there's a huge amount of ground to cover.
Our tip Wear comfortable shoes, the site is large and spread out, and you'll walk a lot between the scattered buildings.
